The project involves the alteration, extension and rehabilitation of the Joaquim Pires Mendes Palace, classified as a Public Interest Property, located in Campo Grande, Lisbon. The building is an eclectic single-family palace, distinguished by its volumetric composition and decorative elements that combine classical, baroque, romantic and Art Nouveau references. The intervention encompasses the main palace and two ancillary buildings located in the rear courtyard — formerly the barn and cellar, and the gatekeeper’s house — integrating them into a unified architectural ensemble.
The proposal aims to preserve the most significant heritage features while adapting the complex to a new use as an educational and university services facility. The intervention adopts a restrained and surgical approach, focusing on interior spaces and roof areas, upgrading infrastructures to meet current regulatory requirements and functional standards, while safeguarding the original character and architectural identity of the ensemble.
