Manta Rota Houses

Two contemporary houses in the Algarve

Selected for “Habitar Portugal 9_11” (Portuguese Architects’ Association), in the category “Between Variation and Symbiosis.”

New-build project comprising two single-family houses, designed together and organized as two semi-detached units, resulting in a unified volumetric composition that responds to the territorial context and the surrounding residential scale.

shading structure filtering light and defining the outdoor space
water plane articulated through planes and framed views
volume with carved openings and a controlled rhythm

Despite its contemporary architectural language, the design of the shutters and shading devices draws on the tradition of wooden filters found in southern houses, introducing a calm and temperate atmosphere through the interplay of light and shadow cast by their patterned screens.

articulation of volumes and materiality in relation to the ground
shading system defining the entrance
shading system shaping light and depth on the façade

In Manta Rota, two houses grow side by side, between contemporary language and the Algarve tradition of shading.
