The memory of the Casa da Moeda transformed into a university campus.

 

The rehabilitation project of the former Casa da Moeda was developed by the architecture studio Mediterrânea, with Posto 9 responsible for the design and development of the interior spaces.

The adaptation of the building to its new academic use involved the restoration of the north and south wings of the existing structure and the demolition of the central core, which was replaced by a new structure that allowed the consolidation of the overall building. Alongside the preservation of the most significant heritage elements, the new intervention adopted a sober and contemporary architectural language, balancing the requirements of comfort and functionality with the memory of the place. Inside, the classrooms and offices were designed with a light and restrained approach, contrasting with the common areas where stone, wood and oxidized brass evoke the building’s former role as the national mint.
