The project involves the alteration and extension of two buildings located on Rua Professor José Buísel, integrated within the ISMAT university campus in the historic center of Portimão. Set within a high-density urban area and surrounded by significant built heritage, the existing buildings date from the 19th and 20th centuries.
The proposal includes the full rehabilitation of the interior spaces and the preservation of the facade of the 19th-century building, retaining its original stonework, cornices and volumetric configuration. From this element, a new volume is developed through contemporary construction, ensuring a homogeneous overall reading of the ensemble while clearly distinguishing between existing fabric and new intervention. The program is organized around classrooms, lecture halls and support spaces, complemented by the requalification of the shared campus courtyard, which plays a structuring role in connecting the buildings and supporting academic life.
