Universidade Lusófona Porto

A careful extension in the heart of Porto

Nominated for “Building of the Year 2021” by ArchDaily, in the Education category.

The Lusófona University of Porto project involves the extension and rehabilitation of an existing building, aimed at reinforcing the university’s teaching facilities. Set within a consolidated urban context and flanked by buildings of recognized architectural value, the original structure, dating from the 1950s, did not hold individual heritage significance and was part of an urban environment shaped by successive, often fragmented interventions.

The proposal seeks to qualify and complete the built ensemble through a controlled extension and a volumetric reorganization that respects the surrounding alignments, heights and proportions. The interior layout was redefined to meet the functional requirements of the academic program, preserving the existing structure wherever possible and clearly distinguishing the contemporary intervention from the original construction, ensuring architectural coherence, urban integration and suitability for its new use.

In the center of Porto, the university grows with sensitivity, integrating the new into the existing urban fabric.
