Located in Campo Grande, Lisbon, the Palácio do Conde de Vimioso is a landmark building dating from the late 17th century and forms part of the city’s historical heritage. The project consists of the rehabilitation and adaptation of the existing complex, preserving its architectural and patrimonial characteristics through the transformation of the interior spaces and the improvement of its structural and functional performance.
The main challenge was to retain and preserve the essential structure of the building while simultaneously converting it from residential use into a university facility, adapting it to the contemporary requirements of an educational program. The adopted approach prioritizes a more assertive intervention at the core of the building—an area that had already undergone several alterations—thus freeing the classroom areas, which retain their original heritage value. In order to clearly identify the new interventions and additions to the existing structure, and to ensure their potential reversibility in the future, the project introduces a series of legible actions, such as the use of exposed concrete in the vertical circulation cores and the negative marking of infilled openings in newly constructed wall segments.
